I originally heard about this game on a feminist blog. She said Lollipop Chainsaw was was the most sexist game ever made. I said to myself, 'I must investigate this!"
Lollipop Chainsaw
A brilliant comedy masterpiece. Written by James Gunn, the man behind the movie Slither and designed by Goichi Suda, the dude in front of the game No More Heroes. Suda 51 made Killer 7 which I have been told is alright. I tried the game he made before this called Shadows Of The Damned, it was aweful.
The main character is a cheerleader named Juliet thrust into an abnormal day at her California high school. She is actually a very well written character as you play through the game. A little ditzy but otherwise has a good head on her shoulders. The main villain is a picked-on nerd fed up with everyone at his high school. Instead of going on a shooting rampage he opens up a rift between our world and a place called Rotten World, and turns everyone into zombies. Also he summons 5 demons to take over areas of the high school; levels 2-6. Luckily Juliet isn't just a sexy cheerleader celebrating her 18th birthday; she's also from a family of zombie hunters. Once she realizes what's going on she pulls out her chainsaw and goes to work.
Juliet's boyfriend Nick gets swarmed by zombies and is taken down while you're busy battling through level 1. Juliet gets there just in the nick of time; by 'in time' I mean she gets there in time to cut off his head from his zombie infested body and perform an enchantment so that he can survive as just a head. Nick is now a secondary weapon that you can shoot and throw at zombies.
The game-play has 3 attacks. Light attack for stunning zombies for minimal amounts of damage; it's used for long combo strings and using heavy attack to decapitate multiple opponents in a single swing. Heavy attack; can be used at the end of combos and has a 4 attack combo of itself. Low attack; for zombies that have lost their legs and are crawling around on the ground. There is a dodge that can be used at any time making for smooth and fluid combat. Later on you get a chainsaw gun and a chainsaw slide. In the store there are lots of combos you can unlock as you progress. You can also play dress-up and buy new cheerleader uniforms. One of the first bosses is a demon rock-star which is the sexist battle that I originally read about. During the battle he screams into the mic and attacks you with insults toward women. Literally, hurtful words fly at you and you have to dodge them.
It was hilarious, the whole game is. The word play between Juliet and Nick I found amusing. The game isn't very long, maybe 5 hours. It was a good length for what it was. Juliet has a daddy complex so there are scores attack for replay-ability; where Juliet compares her score with the score her dad scored fictitiously got when Juliet imagines him doing the things she just did. There's some good music on this game including Cherry Bomb by Joan Jett. This game is worth checking out. Big fan.
